These pallets are often reused for shipping because of their durability, cost-effectiveness, and availability. Here’s a comprehensive description of used pinewood pallets for export purposes:

1. Pallet Specifications for Export:

• Wood Type: Pine (softwood), known for being lightweight yet durable.
• Dimensions:
  • Standard sizes for export pallets are 1200mm x 1000mm (European Standard) or 48 inches x 40 inches (US Standard). However, the dimensions may vary depending on the requirements of the specific industry, company, or customer.
• Weight: The weight of a standard used pinewood pallet typically ranges from 15 to 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs), depending on the size and condition.
• Load Capacity: Used pinewood pallets generally have a load-bearing capacity of 1000 kg to 2000 kg (2200 to 4400 lbs) when evenly distributed. This can vary based on the condition of the pallet and the way it is used.

2. Condition of Used Pinewood Pallets for Export:

• Repaired and Inspected: Used pinewood pallets are inspected for any damage such as cracks, missing boards, or significant wear. Any damaged parts may be repaired before being shipped for export.
• Cleaning: Pallets are cleaned of any debris, nails, or chemicals to meet international shipping standards, especially if the destination country has strict regulations.
• Treated: Many used pallets are heat-treated to meet international shipping regulations. This process helps eliminate pests (e.g., termites) and disease by exposing the wood to high temperatures for a specified time, ensuring compliance with ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15).
• Stamped with Certification: Export pallets may be stamped with a certification mark to show that they meet ISPM 15 standards, such as HT (heat-treated) or MB (methyl bromide treated).

3. ISPM 15 Compliance:

The ISPM 15 standard is a global regulation established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to ensure that wooden packaging materials used in international trade are free from pests and pathogens. Compliance is crucial for any pallet being used for export purposes.

• Heat Treatment (HT): Wood is exposed to high temperatures for at least 30 minutes to kill pests and pathogens.
• Methyl Bromide Treatment (MB): This chemical fumigation method was previously common but is now restricted due to environmental concerns.
• Marking Requirements: Export pallets treated according to ISPM 15 are required to be marked with the following:
  • A symbol for the treatment used (e.g., HT for heat treatment).
  • The country code where the treatment was done.
  • The IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) logo.
  • The treatment date.
